What is Advanced First Aid?

Advanced First Aid is designed for when 911 is not an option, and you become the “EMT” until help is available. The focus Is on long-term patient care, management, and stabilization of specific injuries in remote and wilderness settings.

Advanced First Aid Training is typically conducted in the classroom and an outdoor environment. Participants should come prepared for muddy, wet, hot, or cold climates regardless of the weather setting.

 

This course is a 40-hour 1-week course, designed for those who are usually outdoors, and the topics include:

  • Abdominal Emergencies
  • Allergies and Anaphylaxis
  • Altitude illnesses
  • Bites and stings
  • Burns
  • Cardiac Emergencies
  • Chest Injuries
  • Cold illnesses
  • Common Wilderness medical problems
  • CPR
  • Dislocations
  • Documentation of events
  • Fracture management
  • Head injuries
  • Heat illnesses
  • Lightning strikes
  • Long-term patient care
  • Medical Legal
  • Neurological emergencies
  • Patient assessment system
  • Submersion
  • Urinary and Reproductive system issues
  • Wilderness Drug and First Aid kits
  • Wilderness Wound management

You don’t have to have any previous First Aid training, but participants must be 16 years old. Written and skills testing is required to obtain the Wilderness and Remote First Aid certificate/Advanced First Aid course. CPR certification is also acquired, and the certificates are valid for two years from completion.

The Advanced First Aid course is ideal for the outdoor enthusiast. This course will prepare you for the unexpected. It is designed to meet the needs of camp staff, trip leaders, and individuals working in remote locations. The realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you in skill stations and systems. Organizations like the American Camping Association, the United States Forest Association, and other government agencies approve this course.

The Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will help you prepare for the unexpected. This fast-paced, hands-on training is designed to meet the needs of trip leaders, camp staff, outdoor enthusiasts, and individuals working in remote locations. It will introduce you to caring for people who become ill or injured far from definitive medical care. Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge, skills, and ability to make sound decisions in emergencies.
