CPR & AED Awareness Week 2026

Every Second Counts in the Fight Against Sudden Cardiac Arrest

June 1–7, 2026

Every year, thousands of families are impacted by sudden cardiac arrest. It can happen without warning at home, in schools, at sporting events, in workplaces, or in public spaces. In those critical moments, the actions taken by bystanders can mean the difference between life and death.

That’s why CPR & AED Awareness Week, observed annually from June 1–7, is so important.

This national awareness campaign shines a spotlight on the lifesaving power of CPR education, AED accessibility, and community preparedness. It also serves as a reminder that anyone—regardless of age or profession—can become someone’s hero simply by knowing how to respond during an emergency.

A Mission Inspired by Survival

The Every Second Counts CPR movement was founded by Ed Kosiec, a sudden cardiac arrest survivor whose life was saved because someone nearby knew CPR.

In March 2019, Ed unexpectedly suffered cardiac arrest after completing a training run. Despite being active and healthy, his heart suddenly stopped. Fortunately, an 18-year-old high school student who had CPR training immediately stepped in and began lifesaving compressions until emergency responders arrived.

That single act of courage saved Ed’s life.

Following his recovery, Ed dedicated himself to ensuring more people have the knowledge and confidence to act during cardiac emergencies. He became a CPR instructor, advocate, and founder of Every Second Counts CPR, a nonprofit organization focused on increasing CPR awareness, AED accessibility, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest education nationwide.

Today, his story continues to inspire thousands of people across the country to become trained responders and advocates for lifesaving education.

Why CPR and AED Training Matters

According to national cardiac arrest statistics, survival rates improve significantly when bystanders immediately begin CPR and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

When cardiac arrest occurs:

  • Every minute without CPR decreases survival chances.
  • Early CPR helps maintain blood flow to vital organs.
  • AEDs can restore a normal heart rhythm when used quickly.
  • Immediate action before EMS arrival dramatically improves outcomes.

The reality is simple:

The person who saves a life is often not a healthcare provider—it is a family member, coworker, friend, teacher, coach, or complete stranger who was prepared to act.

Building a Nation of Lifesavers

Every Second Counts CPR is committed to creating communities where CPR knowledge is common, AEDs are accessible, and people feel empowered to respond during emergencies.

The organization’s mission focuses on:

  • CPR Education and Training
  • AED Awareness and Accessibility
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Advocacy
  • Community Outreach Programs
  • Public Safety Education
  • Legislative Efforts Supporting Cardiac Arrest Survival

By increasing awareness and expanding access to training, the organization is helping build a stronger chain of survival across the United States.

National CPR & AED Awareness Rally & March

A major highlight of this year’s awareness efforts will take place in the nation’s capital.

From July 23–25, 2026, Every Second Counts CPR will host the National CPR & AED Awareness Rally & March in Washington, D.C.

This national event will bring together:

  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivors
  • Healthcare Professionals
  • First Responders
  • CPR Instructors
  • Educators
  • Community Leaders
  • Advocacy Organizations
  • Students and Volunteers

Participants will gather to raise awareness about cardiac arrest, advocate for CPR education, promote AED accessibility, and encourage lifesaving legislation that can improve survival outcomes nationwide.

Washington, D.C., provides a powerful platform to elevate this message and unite supporters from across the country around one shared mission:

More trained people. More accessible AEDs. More lives saved.
